Wisconsin Autism Empowerment

What is Autism?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines autism spectrum disorder as “…a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges.” Autism is a difference in neuroprocessing. Those with autism may have sensory differences, communication variances, and anxiety in some environments. The term ‘spectrum’ identifies that the disorder has a range of impacts on the lives it touches. However, it is essential to know that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, neurotypical or not.

Autism is a commonly diagnosed disorder; 1 in 36 children receive the diagnosis. There are stereotypes applied to autism that can be inaccurate, even harmful. Individuals with autism encounter hurdles often due to societal expectations without flexibility by the unwritten rules we’re expected to follow. Early diagnosis and support can unlock the vast potential dwelling within autistic individuals. By nurturing collective awareness and offering support, we can shape a society that embraces inclusivity and deep understanding for those within the autism spectrum. Together, we can break down barriers, ensuring that everyone, irrespective of their abilities, is embraced, cherished, and empowered to lead a life of purpose and significance.

About Us

Who We Are

This group provides autistic individuals or other individuals with disorders on the spectrum (and those who love them) to get together, chat, build friendships, and support each other. We also hold events that build social skills, engage creativity, and provide mentorship to bring down the barriers caused by autism.

Our group is led by our members. We hold special events with out partners at our member’s request. In the past, we have invited theater and writing

Why We Exist

We exist to create a safe place for people with autism and other disorders on the spectrum to network, provide mentorship, and express themselves.
